GOSPEL REFLECTIONS OF POPE FRANCIS: 05/06/24 (Monday of the Sixth Week of Easter)

From the Gospel according to John
Jn 15:26—16:4a

Jesus said to his disciples:
“When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father,
the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,
he will testify to me.
And you also testify,
because you have been with me from the beginning.

“I have told you this so that you may not fall away.
They will expel you from the synagogues;
in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you
will think he is offering worship to God.
They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me.
I have told you this so that when their hour comes
you may remember that I told you.”

Words of the Holy Father:

“When the Paraclete comes, whom I will send to you from the Father…” (Jn 15:26). With these words, Jesus promises to send his disciples the Holy Spirit, the ultimate gift, the gift of gifts. (…) The Paraclete is the Comforter. All of us, particularly at times of difficulty (…) look for consolation. Often, though, we turn only to earthly comforts, ephemeral comforts that quickly fade. Today, Jesus offers us heavenly comfort, the Holy Spirit, who is “of comforters the best” (Sequence). What is the difference? The comforts of the world are like a pain reliever: they can give momentary relief, but not cure the illness we carry deep within. They can soothe us, but not heal us at the core. They work on the surface, on the level of the senses, but hardly touch our hearts. Only someone who makes us feel loved for who we are can give peace to our hearts. The Holy Spirit, the love of God, does precisely that. He comes down within us; as the Spirit, he acts in our spirit. He comes down “within the heart”, as “the soul’s most welcome guest” (ibid). He is the very love of God, who does not abandon us; for being present to those who are alone is itself a source of comfort. (Homily, 23 May 2021)

GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY: 05/05/24 (Sixth Sunday of Easter)

GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY: 05/05/24 (Sixth Sunday of Easter)

Gospel
Jn 15:9-17

Jesus said to his disciples:
“As the Father loves me, so I also love you.
Remain in my love.
If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commandments
and remain in his love.

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you
and your joy might be complete.
This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
You are my friends if you do what I command you.
I no longer call you slaves,
because a slave does not know what his master is doing.
I have called you friends,
because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you
and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,
so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you: love one another.”

Reflection:

In our gospel today, Jesus commanded us to love one another. If love is merely a feeling, why does it need to be commanded? This is because love is not just a feeling. It is a decision.

We choose to love. The truth is we are capable of loving even our enemies and the people who dislike us. This is what God did for us. Despite offending Him due to our sins, He continues to forgive us. God still desires what is best for us even though we are undeserving of it. In the same way, we can love others even though our feelings are still not okay towards them. This love is seen in our forgiveness towards others and in our prayers because we want what is good for them. This is the type of love where we are not enslaved by our anger, fear, or hatred. God assists us in doing this because it’s not possible through our strength alone.

It’s easy to love when our relationships with others are good and peaceful. Our love is tested when it becomes difficult to love someone, but this is still God’s commandment. He chose us and appointed us to love. Sometimes, even though loving requires sacrifice and can be painful, it’s in this love that we truly feel alive. Those who fear to love and refuse to give themselves because of this fear remain spiritually dead. God, who is Love, is the One who brings us to life. This Love within us and given to others will be our path to Heaven, not anger, pride, or any material possession.

May we believe and continuously ponder on this. Amen. +

May our Loving and Almighty God bless us, and may He defend us against temptations and evil now and forever. Amen. +

ANG MABUTING BALITA AT PAGNINILAY: “Espiritu ng Diyos”

ANG MABUTING BALITA AT PAGNINILAY: “Espiritu ng Diyos”

Mayo 6, 2024.

Amen. +

Pagpalain po tayong lahat ng Mapagmahal at Makapangyarihang Diyos, at ipagsanggalang nawa Niya tayo laban sa tukso at masasama ngayon at magpakailanman. Amen. +
